She's a woman whom I believe is a plastic shaman. At the time of this writing she doesn't list a phone number nor an address on her website. She lists an email address. I had emailed her several times with a question regarding her services. I never received a reply back, and yes, I'd checked my junk mail folder. About a year later I decided to take a chance. Instead of just emailing the woman I stupidly sent the $50 deposit and it was a mistake. Ms. Oliver promptly replied and we shared several emails in the course of a day. By the 4th reply I realized the woman was not for me so I canceled my appointment right then and lost my deposit. Ms. Oliver kindly reminded me deposits are non-refundable, but told me she'd keep the money as credit should I change my mind, a courtesy, she said. So If any of you want my advice - I'd say seek another practitioner or email Ms. Oliver without sending money. If you cannot get a reply to a simple question either - DO NOT BE STUPID, DO NOT SEND $50. Her website mentions the deposits are to honor her time. I wonder how many emails she deletes in a week, however as doing so certainly dishonors other people's time? I had sent three emails about a year ago over the course of two weeks. I even phoned the community center where Anna supposedly conducts a meditation class. When I called there the woman I spoke to checked around a bit then told me she didn't know an Anna Oliver and said she couldn't help me. I know. Maybe I should have asked the woman on the phone right way for money to honor my time!(attempting to laugh here).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6455297.post-27843441090727342242014-10-13T18:37:27.197-07:002014-10-13T18:37:27.197-07:00Glad you used the site, Movie Star. There are many European forms of paganism -- not directly transmitted from the old ways because of the Christian interregnum, but honest attempts at reconstructions that fill the needs of their people. There are African, Central- and South-American, and Pacific Islander religious preservations & reconstructions, and of course most of the Native Asian religions are still around.

Any way you look at it, we American immigrants do not have to appropriate Native practices, especially when the Native Elders have said they object. We have ancestors of our own, spiritualities of our own. The one thing these spiritualities lack is a connection to the land we live on now, but that can be remedied with some research and creativity.

Dana CorbyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6455297.post-40827065031478649982014-02-11T13:15:09.818-08:002014-02-11T13:15:09.818-08:00Yes, by all means, it's important for non-Nati...Yes, by all means, it's important for non-Natives to respect Indian spiritual practices by -- at the very least -- speaking of them respectfully and correctly.

It's also important for other people's spiritualities to be respected. We all have something positive and beneficial to offer one another. All cultures have something to offer. Now, if there is one thing, we Euro-descended white folks have, it is a healthy sense of capitalism. Moreover, I do not feel that capitalism is all such a bad deal. In fact, it is what makes our great country - including our Native citizens - "go around," metaphorically speaking.

Now if "white folks" are interested in learning about Native spiritualism and want in on a "good thing," well, so be it. If they want to fork over hard-earned cash to learn more about it, so much the better. Instead of griping about "plastic shaman" and how they exploit Native culture, lets have some genuine Natives turn this thing around and assume the role of teachers and leaders. "Plastic shaman" would not have much of a following if real Native spiritualists stepped forth and assumed the role of leadership for peoples (white or native) who genuinely want to learn and improve themselves.

So let's stop bitching and let's start leading the way. Teach your fellow man that which you know (and which is good) regardless of the color of his or her skin. Let's not engage in bias and prejudice here. Share the wealth. And if it just so happens that people are willing to pay for this knowledge - and the time and effort it takes to teach it, so much the better. Since when is everyone here who is complaining all so wealthy that you'all can afford to turn down the opportunity to earn an honest buck. Since the children were young, we’ve been involved with the spiritual ceremonies of their indigenous religion. Their involvement has been and is direct, while mine has always been as a very interested observer. I’ve observed that their religion is regional, shared with a few other tribes in the same area. In readings, I’ve seen that their religion and their cultural beliefs differ from those held by Natives Americans in other areas. That makes me suspect that indigenous religions (either the American type or the old Euro type) are very local in nature. Most of us from the Euro tribes have lost our indigenous religions and no longer know of our spiritual places. Likewise, many of Native American descent also have lost their religions and knowledge of spiritual places.

I grew up in the Christian religion and traditions. I think Christianity grew to be a mega-religion not just through war and domination, but also by blending ideas of earlier religions with their own into an appealing single package. It’s probably the same for the other “major” religions. We’ve all grown up with the idea that there is one religion to rule them all, ours. We’ve been taught that our religion is the one size that fits them all and is right for all the people of the Universe.

But, some of us have begun thinking that perhaps the One Religion idea may not actually be right and we’re searching for something more personal… akin to our own now-lost indigenous religion.

It makes perfect sense that the New Age Shamans of the Native American Slant have basically used that same formula and generalized all Native American religious beliefs into one more easily marketable New Age Native American Spirituality (with a few other things added for good measure). So, unfortunately, this is just more of the same.

But, I have some trouble wondering: What then is there for the people who have been disconnected from their own “true” religion or the spirituality of their ancestors?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6455297.post-44922177447625897252011-04-11T12:38:22.782-07:002011-04-11T12:38:22.782-07:00King Powhatan's family and The King had a much...King Powhatan's family and The King had a much larger domain than some think, and it included a food grainery system somewhat like the Pharoahs of Egypt.
