I liked your article “Plastic Shamans”. I’m a blue-eyed white guy from the Saxon “tribe.” My wife and children are Native American. Since the children were young, we’ve been involved with the spiritual ceremonies of their indigenous religion. Their involvement has been and is direct, while mine has always been as a very interested observer. I’ve observed that their religion is regional, shared with a few other tribes in the same area. In readings, I’ve seen that their religion and their cultural beliefs differ from those held by Natives Americans in other areas. That makes me suspect that indigenous religions (either the American type or the old Euro type) are very local in nature. Most of us from the Euro tribes have lost our indigenous religions and no longer know of our spiritual places. Likewise, many of Native American descent also have lost their religions and knowledge of spiritual places.

I grew up in the Christian religion and traditions. I think Christianity grew to be a mega-religion not just through war and domination, but also by blending ideas of earlier religions with their own into an appealing single package. It’s probably the same for the other “major” religions. We’ve all grown up with the idea that there is one religion to rule them all, ours. We’ve been taught that our religion is the one size that fits them all and is right for all the people of the Universe.

But, some of us have begun thinking that perhaps the One Religion idea may not actually be right and we’re searching for something more personal… akin to our own now-lost indigenous religion.

It makes perfect sense that the New Age Shamans of the Native American Slant have basically used that same formula and generalized all Native American religious beliefs into one more easily marketable New Age Native American Spirituality (with a few other things added for good measure). So, unfortunately, this is just more of the same.

But, I have some trouble wondering: What then is there for the people who have been disconnected from their own “true” religion or the spirituality of their ancestors?

Um, well I know 2 sisters who are from a Tribal Nation that is an Algonquin language speaking Nation and they both have Squaw in their first names. It's not my language so I'm not going to tell them or any Algonquin speaking people that they can't use that word. I think it's odd to do that. Get a grip people.

It is always amazing to see so many Western Europeans - or White people - upset and confused as they stay rigidly fixed in their own proselytizing and privileged attitudes and believe that they can have whatever they want if they just pay for it.... I urge you all to go to the "sweats for pay" and find yourself hurt or worse. I wonder how people would think of people taking your Catholic sacred host and tossing it like a peanut into someone's mouth and calling it the NEW AGE sacred host. One might argue even that it brought a clearer spiritual path. There are cultural differences here that you cannot recognize if you are NOT born into a Native American family and anyone SELLING their faith simply remains stuck in their pampered and elitist ethnocentrism!

The ones who have adopted what’s left of the “old ways” cannot deny the fact that the sustenance to “feed” is missing- in other words the “matter” does not exist in are everyday life. The Sacred Animals are not there at our disposal we have no buck skin that “WE” have hunted, spirit did not honour us with the body of the Sacred Animal to make prayer objects and buying them from a store does not count, one must go into the wild for them, or have them handed down to you from family , so we only honour the influence or a dogma, the essence of organized religion, so it is no wonder that one thinks it’s “Ok” or right to worship only the essence of what’s left of are Animist knowledge and to go on “believing”, without the sustenance of “matter” which in the past, the ways of life had.

Now the “ways” of life at hand is the “consumer movement” and no “matter” how we convince ourselves or others of what is not, we are part of this movement, except for the tribes that have not yet be contacted.

We all may believe in a parallel existence or not but in relation to a sacred animal there is a physical and the metaphysical world around it, one without the other, it would ceases to exist, with the “New Sacred Animals” there is a void that needs to be filled with this co-existence, in the Animist Knowledge or the “Old Ways” the Animal, Tree, Rock or Person can only exist with its counterpart the spirit, and in the corporate consumer movement we lack our counterpart. Yes, one may think that you do have your counterpart the Eagle, wolf or whatever spirit animal that one may have adopted, but remember one does not have the sustenance or the “matter” to support a true relationship. What one does have is the Pig, Cow, Hen or the essence of the Dinosaur and other raw martial’s that has been refined to meet are needs to sustain are lifestyles, a now, there is one’s counterpart to create a true harmonious relationship between the metaphysical and the physical world of are Consumerist lifestyle, one can only and truly go on to exist by excepting that this is the reality of all are lives in this, the “ Consumer Movement” and the New- Sacred Animals.

I met Tony back in May of 2000. Myself along with two other friends of mine were about to hike the Sespe trail from Lions camp to Fillmore. A big storm had rolled through a couple days before and made crossing the nearly Sespe impossible. After spending about an hour looking for a place to cross we noticed a couple mules stuck on an island in the middle of the Sespe at Lions camp. Then Tony showed up with his trailer and his surf board. Tony had been hired to rescue the mules from the island. He took his surf board out along with his wetsuit and rode the Sespe to the island and pulled the horses out. I took pictures of the event:

On the Outfitters tribute page to Tony there is picture of him standing in front of his horse trailer from that day. His surf board attached to the side of the trailer. If you look at the picture you can see myself along with my two friends Zach and Justin standing up inside the trailer with the horses.

I have ran into Tony a few times since 2000. He was always fun to talk too. I'm glad we ran into him on that wet morning back in 2000, I think he saved our lives by his shear knowledge of the area. Had we tried to cross we might not be here now. I will miss him.

Another Christmas without my litte brother I never had. That was what Tony called me. We grew up together & I taught him to ride when we were kids. My family owned the stable down the street from him. He always had a big kind heart & great personality even as a little kid. I miss you so much little brother. See you in the future.....
